A first principle is the awareness that inclusive research is important. It really makes a difference when we are aware that it is important to hear this group. It also sounds only logical: by involving a larger, more diverse group of people, research results will be better for everyone involved if you strive for more understandable and simple information and ditto services.

So keep asking yourself: who do I want to be able to say something about with this research? And: To what extent are people in a vulnerable situation sufficiently secured in my intended population?

Participating in research can emotional reactions in certain people, more than in other respondents. As a researcher you need to realize that. For example, questions about experiences can evoke frustration or sadness.

If a respondent has difficulty reading, you have to adjust accordingly. Another point of attention is dependency. Socially vulnerable situations make people dependent more quickly than people who are in a non-vulnerable situation. This may mean that there is a chance that people will feel pressured more quickly and, for example, not participate fully voluntarily in the study.

As a researcher, you have to take responsibility for both the possible emotion that research entails and the dependence on the respondent. You do this, for example, by emphasizing that participating in the VP HR Email Lists research is voluntary and by expressing your appreciation for participation. This can be done, for example, by giving a monetary compensation or a gift voucher. Understandable and accessible informed consent is necessary. This is a document that describes, among other things:

Give Respectful and equal approach

Another important principle is that you involve people in your research in an equal, respectful way. Of course, that is always an important starting point, regardless of the target group, but I want to emphasize it extra for inclusive research. A large group of people in a socially vulnerable situation is often  with the, complexity and incomprehensibility of the world them. This can ensure that they cannot (fully) participate, and are therefore. By not treating this group equally and with respect, you also defend this group. Equality is, of course, in entering into a conversation in a respectful manner, but also in making the research material understandable and accessible (see point 5).
